King Wu of Chu
King Wu of Chu, personal name Xiong Tong, ruled the State of Chu from 740 to 690 BCE. In 704 BCE he became the first ruler of Chu to take the title of king, rejecting the Zhou order in which only the Zhou ruler was king. He expanded Chu against its neighbours in the Han River region, notably the state of Sui, and died while on campaign against Sui in 690 BCE.
