Korps Marechaussee te voet

1890 · 19th century

The Korps Marechaussee te voet was a Dutch colonial counter-insurgency force formed in Aceh in 1890. Its small, mobile brigades of Indonesian soldiers under Dutch officers, armed with carbines and the klewang sword, pursued guerrillas through jungle and hills. Used by General van Heutsz to break Acehnese resistance, it became notorious for harsh reprisals, above all in the Gayo and Alas campaign of 1904.
