Lae

Lae is the second-largest city of Papua New Guinea and capital of Morobe Province, at the mouth of the Markham River on the Huon Gulf. It grew in the 1920s and 1930s as the air base for the Bulolo goldfields, and Amelia Earhart took off from there on her last flight in 1937. Destroyed in the Second World War, it was rebuilt as the country's main industrial centre and port.
