Lao Chakkaraj

Also known as Lavachakkaraj

Lao Chakkaraj is the legendary founder of the ruling line of Ngoenyang, the Tai principality on the upper Mekong around Chiang Saen. Northern Thai chronicles place him in the 7th century and describe him as descending from the heavens, but these early dates rest on legend. His line was traced down to King Mangrai, who built Ngoenyang into the kingdom of Lan Na in the late 13th century.
