Look East Policy
The Look East Policy was an economic and educational policy launched by the Malaysian prime minister Mahathir Mohamad in 1982. It urged Malaysians to learn from the work ethic, management and industrial methods of Japan and South Korea rather than the West, and sent thousands of students and trainees there. It underpinned heavy-industry projects such as the national car company Proton.
