Die Lorelei

poem 1824; Silcher's setting 1837 · 19th century

The Lorelei is a steep slate rock, 132 metres high, on the right bank of the Rhine in the Rhine Gorge at Sankt Goarshausen. Its strong currents and loud echo made it a place of shipwrecks from the 10th century on, and its name is usually read as "murmuring rock". Old tales placed dwarfs in caves inside it. The woman of the rock was the invention of a poet.
