Manado

Also known as Menado

Manado is the capital of North Sulawesi province in Indonesia, a port at the northern tip of Sulawesi. The Dutch East India Company built a fort there in the seventeenth century, and the surrounding Minahasa region became largely Christian under Dutch rule. Its people were recruited in large numbers into the colonial army and administration, and Manado remains a commercial centre of eastern Indonesia.
