Marco Antonio Bragadin

1523–1571 · 16th century

Marco Antonio Bragadin was the Venetian governor of Famagusta in Cyprus during the Ottoman invasion of 1570–1571. He defended the city through a siege of almost a year until supplies ran out and surrendered on terms in August 1571. The Ottoman commander Lala Mustafa Pasha then broke the agreement, and Bragadin was mutilated and flayed alive. His skin was later recovered and is kept in Venice.
