María de Molina

c. 1265–1321 · 14th century

María de Molina was Queen of Castile as the wife of Sancho IV and twice served as regent. After Sancho's death in 1295 she defended the throne of her young son Ferdinand IV against rival claimants and rebellious nobles, and after Ferdinand's death in 1312 she was regent again for her grandson Alfonso XI. Her inheritance of the lordship of Molina brought it to the Crown of Castile.
