Maria II of Portugal

1819–1853 · 19th century · Also known as Maria da Glória

Maria II was Queen of Portugal from 1826 to 1828 and from 1834 to 1853. Daughter of Pedro I of Brazil, she became queen when her father abdicated the Portuguese throne, but her uncle Miguel usurped it in 1828. Pedro's liberal forces won the civil war of 1828 to 1834 and restored her, and she reigned as a constitutional monarch.
