Terceira

Terceira is an island of the Azores in the Atlantic, whose main town, Angra do Heroísmo, is a World Heritage Site. During the Portuguese Liberal Wars it was the only part of the kingdom held by supporters of Maria II, who repelled a Miguelist landing at the Battle of Praia in 1829 and set up a regency there. It is also home to the Lajes air base, used by the United States since the Second World War.
