Mashonaland
Mashonaland is the region of northern and north-eastern Zimbabwe inhabited mainly by the Shona people. Claimed by the Ndebele kingdom, it was occupied in 1890 by the Pioneer Column of the British South Africa Company, which founded Fort Salisbury, later Harare. Its people rose against company rule in 1896–1897, and today it forms three provinces of Zimbabwe.
