Mawanda of Buganda
Mawanda was kabaka of Buganda in the early eighteenth century. He extended the kingdom eastwards towards Busoga and strengthened royal control by appointing chiefs who owed their posts to the king rather than to the clans. This shift of power from clan heads to royal appointees was a key step in the growth of the centralised Buganda state.
