Mawali
The mawali were non-Arab converts to Islam in the early caliphates, attached as clients to Arab tribes. Under the Umayyad Caliphate they often faced discrimination in taxation and status despite conversion. Their grievances, especially in Khorasan, fed support for the Abbasid revolution that overthrew the Umayyads.
