Abd al-Rahman I

Abd al-Rahman I was an Umayyad prince who escaped the massacre of his family during the Abbasid Revolution and fled to al-Andalus. In 756 he established an independent Umayyad emirate based at Córdoba, which never recognised Abbasid authority. His survival meant that Umayyad rule continued in Iberia after the fall of the Umayyad Caliphate in the east, limiting the reach of the Abbasid Caliphate in the west.
