Abbasid Revolution

750 · 8th century

The Abbasid Revolution was the uprising that overthrew the Umayyad Caliphate and brought the Abbasid dynasty to power in 750. Launched from Khurasan under the organiser Abu Muslim, it drew on discontent among non-Arab Muslims and supporters of the Prophet's family. It ended Umayyad rule in the east, shifted the centre of the caliphate towards Iraq, and is central to the foundation of the Abbasid Caliphate.
