Abd al-Rahman al-Ghafiqi

d. 732 · 8th century

Abd al-Rahman al-Ghafiqi was the Umayyad governor of al-Andalus in 721 and again from 730. In 732 he led a large raid across the Pyrenees into Gaul, sacked Bordeaux and advanced towards Tours, but was defeated and killed by the Frankish leader Charles Martel at the Battle of Tours (Poitiers). The battle marked the limit of Muslim expansion into western Europe.
