Battle of Tours

732 CE · 8th century · Part of the Umayyad invasion of Gaul

The Battle of Tours, also called the Battle of Poitiers, was fought in 732 CE in western France, where Frankish forces under Charles Martel defeated an Umayyad army led by Abd al-Rahman al-Ghafiqi. It halted the northward advance of the Umayyad Caliphate from Iberia. The victory greatly increased the power of Charles Martel and laid foundations for the Carolingian Empire.
