Mirza Hasan Shirazi
Mirza Hasan Shirazi was an Iranian Shi'i jurist, the leading religious authority of his time, who taught at Samarra in Ottoman Iraq. In December 1891 a ruling attributed to him declared the use of tobacco forbidden while a British company held the Iranian tobacco monopoly, and the resulting nationwide boycott, the Tobacco Protest, forced Naser al-Din Shah to cancel the concession in 1892.
