Monastery of Leyre

Also known as San Salvador de Leyre, Leire Monastery

The Monastery of Leyre (San Salvador de Leyre) is a monastery in eastern Navarre near Yesa, one of the oldest and most important in Spain. In the tenth and eleventh centuries it was closely linked to the kings of Pamplona, who were buried there and endowed it with great estates. Its Romanesque crypt and church date from the eleventh century, and Benedictine monks have occupied it again since 1954.
