San Salvador

1525 · 16th century

San Salvador is the capital of El Salvador, founded by the Spanish in 1525 and re-established in 1528 after Pipil resistance. A provincial capital within the Captaincy General of Guatemala, it became in 1834 the seat of the Federal Republic of Central America, whose liberal leader Francisco Morazán made it his base until the federation collapsed. It has often been damaged by earthquakes.
