Salvador
Salvador is a city on the north-eastern coast of Brazil, founded in 1549 by the first Governor-General, Tomé de Sousa. It served as the capital of Portuguese colonial Brazil until 1763 and was a major centre of the sugar economy and the Atlantic slave trade. Accounts of the Portuguese Empire treat its foundation as the start of a more systematic colonial administration in Brazil.
