Guatemala City

1776 · 18th century · Also known as Nueva Guatemala de la Asunción

Guatemala City was founded in 1776 as the new capital of the Captaincy General of Guatemala, after earthquakes ruined Santiago, now Antigua Guatemala. It grew over the site of the ancient Maya city of Kaminaljuyu. It was the capital of the Federal Republic of Central America until 1834 and has since been the capital of Guatemala.
