Mongol invasion of Kievan Rus'

1223–1242 · 13th century · Part of the Mongol invasion of Europe

The Mongol invasion of Kievan Rus' began with a raid that defeated the Rus' princes at the Kalka River in 1223 and became a full conquest under Batu Khan in 1237–1240. Ryazan, Vladimir and many other cities were destroyed and Kyiv fell in December 1240; the Rus' principalities then paid tribute to the Golden Horde for some two centuries.
