1219–1221 · 13th century · Also known as full-scale invasion by Genghis Khan

The Mongol invasion of the Khwarazmian Empire was the campaign of 1219 to 1221 launched by Genghis Khan after the Khwarazm Shah's governor killed Mongol envoys and merchants. Mongol armies captured and devastated the great cities of Transoxiana and Khorasan. The Khwarazmian Empire collapsed, and its last ruler, Jalal al-Din, fought on in exile.
