Muhammad IX of Granada

d. 1453 · 15th century · Also known as Muhammad al-Aysar

Muhammad IX, called al-Aysar (the Left-handed), was Nasrid emir of Granada four times between 1419 and 1453. Supported by the Abencerraje family, he was repeatedly deposed and restored in civil wars with rival claimants, some backed by Castile, such as Yusuf IV in 1432. His long, interrupted rule coincided with Castilian advances and deepened the divisions that weakened the emirate.
