Northumberland
Northumberland is the northernmost county of England, between the Tyne and the Tweed, crossed by Hadrian's Wall. Formerly the northern part of the Anglian kingdom of Northumbria, it was long disputed with Scotland: David I's son Henry held the earldom from 1139, until Henry II reclaimed it in 1157. Its border lands remained a zone of raids and fortified towers into the sixteenth century.
