poem written in the summer of 1785; Beethoven's setting in the Ninth Symphony completed in 1824 · 18th century · Also known as An die Freude

Friedrich Schiller wrote "An die Freude" in the summer of 1785. From the beginning of May until mid-September that year he stayed with his publisher, Georg Joachim Göschen, at Gohlis near Leipzig, where he wrote the poem together with his play Don Carlos. The friendship of Christian Gottfried Körner, his longtime friend and patron, had inspired it. The ode was published the next year in the magazine Thalia.
