Oriente (Ecuador)
The Oriente is the Amazonian lowland of eastern Ecuador, east of the Andes, covering nearly half the country's territory but home to a small share of its population, including many indigenous peoples. Much of the larger Amazon territory once claimed by Ecuador was lost to Peru in 1942. The discovery of oil there in 1967 made it the source of most of Ecuador's export revenue.
