People's Volunteer Army

1950–1958 · 20th century · Also known as Chinese People's Volunteers

The People's Volunteer Army was the force of the People's Republic of China that fought in the Korean War. Sent into Korea in October 1950 under Peng Dehuai, it drove United Nations forces back from the Yalu River and fought them to a stalemate before the armistice of July 1953, at the cost of hundreds of thousands of Chinese dead. The last units left North Korea in 1958.
