Peter of Moscow

d. 1326 · 14th century · Also known as Metropolitan Peter of Moscow

Peter of Moscow was Metropolitan of Kiev and All Rus' from 1308 until his death in 1326. Originally from Galicia-Volhynia, he clashed with the princes of Tver and spent increasing time in Moscow, where he settled around 1325 and began the first stone Dormition Cathedral in the Kremlin. His burial there and his canonisation in 1339 gave Moscow a religious prestige that helped make it the centre of the Russian church.
