Pierre Nkurunziza

1964–2020 · 21st century

Pierre Nkurunziza was a Hutu former rebel commander of the CNDD-FDD who became president of Burundi in 2005, after the civil war. His decision to seek a disputed third term in 2015 led to protests, a failed coup attempt and a wave of repression and emigration. He stepped down in 2020 and died shortly afterwards.
