Plan of Casa Mata

1823 · 19th century

The Plan of Casa Mata was a declaration issued on 1 February 1823 by army officers who had been sent to put down Antonio López de Santa Anna's revolt at Veracruz. It called for the election of a new congress and gave power to the provincial deputations. Quickly adopted by the provinces and garrisons, it forced Emperor Agustín I to abdicate in March 1823 and led to the federal republic of 1824.
