Pohnpei

Also known as Ponape

Pohnpei is a volcanic island in the eastern Caroline Islands of the western Pacific, the largest island of the Federated States of Micronesia and home to its capital, Palikir. Under the Saudeleur dynasty, from roughly the 12th to the 17th century, it was ruled from Nan Madol, a complex of artificial islets built of basalt off its eastern shore. It was later divided into chiefdoms under Nahnmwarki and came under Spanish, German, Japanese and American rule.
