Pope Gregory XIII

1502–1585 · 16th century · Also known as Ugo Boncompagni

Gregory XIII was pope from 1572 to 1585. In 1582 he introduced the reformed Gregorian calendar, now used throughout the world, and he founded or endowed many colleges for the training of priests, notably the Jesuits' Roman College, later named the Pontifical Gregorian University in his honour. Banditry and financial strain troubled the Papal States in his last years.
