19th century–present · 19th century

The Ramnagar Ramlila is a month-long performance of the Ramlila held each year at Ramnagar, across the Ganges from Varanasi, under the patronage of the Maharajas of Benares. Begun in the 19th century, it is staged in different parts of the town, which serve as fixed sets, and the audience moves with the action. It is regarded as the most traditional of all Ramlila performances.
