Awadh
Awadh, or Oudh, is a region of north-central Uttar Pradesh in India, between the Ganges and the Himalayan foothills. From the 1720s it was ruled by the Nawabs of Awadh, first as Mughal governors and then as near-independent rulers, from Faizabad and later Lucknow. The British annexed it in 1856, a grievance that fed the rebellion of 1857, and joined it to the United Provinces.
