Awaji Island

Awaji Island is the largest island of Japan's Inland Sea, lying between Honshu and Shikoku and now part of Hyogo Prefecture. In Japanese mythology it is the first island created by the gods Izanagi and Izanami. Added to the Tokushima domain of the Hachisuka family in 1615, it was separated from it after a violent dispute with the Inada family, its local governors, in 1870, and it is now linked to the mainland by the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge.
