Lucknow
Lucknow is the capital of the state of Uttar Pradesh in northern India, on the river Gomti. It became the capital of the Nawabs of Awadh in 1775 and flourished as a centre of Urdu poetry, music, architecture and cuisine. During the Indian Rebellion of 1857 its British Residency was besieged for months, and the city remains known for its Nawabi monuments and courtly culture.
