Asaf-ud-Daula

1748–1797 · 18th century

Asaf-ud-Daula was Nawab of Awadh from 1775 until his death in 1797. He moved the capital from Faizabad to Lucknow, which he transformed with monuments such as the Bara Imambara and the Rumi Darwaza, built partly as famine relief from 1784. His court attracted poets and artists, but he ceded territory and revenue to the East India Company, which increasingly controlled his state.
