Rómulo Betancourt

1908–1981 · 20th century

Rómulo Betancourt was a Venezuelan politician, founder of the social-democratic party Democratic Action, often called the father of Venezuelan democracy. He headed a revolutionary junta from 1945 to 1948 and, after the fall of Marcos Pérez Jiménez, was elected president for 1959–1964, defending democracy against coups and guerrillas; his Betancourt Doctrine denied recognition to governments that seized power by force.
