Salinguerra II Torelli

c. 1160–1244 · 13th century

Salinguerra II Torelli was the leader of the Ghibelline Torelli family in Ferrara and for decades the city's dominant figure. He fought the Guelph Este marquises for control of the commune and allied himself with Emperor Frederick II. In 1240 Azzo VII d'Este, with papal and Venetian help, captured Ferrara and took him prisoner; he died in Venice, opening the way to Este lordship.
