Seongjong of Goryeo

961–997 · 10th century

Seongjong of Goryeo was king of Goryeo from 981 to 997. Following the advice of Choe Seung-ro, he governed on Confucian principles, created twelve provincial governorships in 983 and founded the national academy, the Gukjagam, in 992. In 993 he faced the first Khitan invasion, ended by the negotiations of Seo Hui.
