Sétif
Sétif is a city on the high plains of north-eastern Algeria, capital of Sétif Province. It stands on the site of the Roman colony of Sitifis, capital of the late Roman province of Mauretania Sitifensis. On 8 May 1945 nationalist demonstrations there turned into riots that were followed by mass reprisals by French forces, an event that hardened Algerian nationalism.
