Siege of Dorostolon

971 · 10th century · Also known as Siege of Dorostolon (971) · Part of the Sviatoslav's invasion of Bulgaria

The Siege of Dorostolon took place from April to July 971 at Dorostolon, now Silistra, on the lower Danube. The Byzantine emperor John I Tzimiskes besieged Prince Sviatoslav I of Kiev, who had invaded Bulgaria, until hunger and losses forced him to make peace and withdraw. The war ended Rus' ambitions on the Danube and led to Byzantium's annexation of eastern Bulgaria.
