Southern District (Gran Colombia)

1822–1830 · 19th century · Also known as District of the South

The Southern District was one of the three great districts of Gran Colombia, comprising the departments of Quito, Guayaquil and Cuenca, roughly present-day Ecuador. It was incorporated after the patriot victory at Pichincha in 1822. On 13 May 1830 an assembly in Quito declared it independent, and later that year a congress at Riobamba gave the new state a constitution and the name Ecuador.
