Strait of Otranto

The Strait of Otranto connects the Adriatic Sea with the Ionian Sea, separating the heel of Italy at Otranto from Albania. About 72 kilometres wide, it has long been a crossing point between Italy and the Balkans and a strategic choke point; in the First World War the Allies blockaded it with the Otranto Barrage.
