Otranto
Otranto is a town on the coast of Apulia, the easternmost town of Italy, facing Albania across the Strait of Otranto. An ancient Greek and Byzantine port, it was captured by an Ottoman force in August 1480, when many inhabitants were killed, including the 813 later venerated as the Martyrs of Otranto. Its recovery in 1481 ended the only Ottoman foothold in mainland Italy.
