Sultan Agung

c. 1593–1645 · 17th century · Also known as Sultan Agung of Mataram

Sultan Agung was the third ruler of the Mataram Sultanate in central Java, reigning from 1613 to 1645. He conquered most of Java's north coast, besieging Surabaya until its fall in 1625 and subduing Sumedang, Giri and Madura, and twice besieged Dutch Batavia, in 1628 and 1629, without success. He introduced the Javanese calendar that blends Islamic and Saka reckoning.
