Swami Vivekananda

1863–1902 · 19th century · Also known as Narendranath Datta

Swami Vivekananda was an Indian Hindu monk, a disciple of Ramakrishna, who did much to introduce Vedanta and yoga to the West. Before his celebrated address to the World's Parliament of Religions in Chicago in 1893 he travelled across India as a wandering monk, hosted by rulers such as those of Limbdi and Khetri. In 1897 he founded the Ramakrishna Mission, and his teaching shaped modern Hindu reform and Indian nationalism.
